In my 40+ years of Christian ministry I have only come across one sure case of 'demon possession'. That was in the context of an amerindian culture, where there was a 'control through fear' use of the situation by the one affected. Maybe another reason for being 'susceptible' is by being a 'power freak'! Willing to use any means to gain control over your fellow human beings. "Selling your soul to the Devil" may not be far off the truth in that kind of context.
Certainly there must be co-operation with a good (Christian?) psychiatrist in the case of symptoms of mental illness before any diagnosis is made.
To the question “Is it only the mentally ill that can be demon possessed?” My answer would be an emphatic "No!"
Blessings

From what I have read, that's not the case at all. One has to be a sinner in order to be susceptible, but that's all. Sin opens the door. Have you read Amorth's books? He has a bit on working closely with prominent psychiatrists to avoid mis-diagnosis.
