CofE disinvests from NewsCorp – Murdoch must be shaking in his boots

The Church of England have just announced they will be selling their £1.9m worth of shares in NewsCorp due to the phone hacking scandal.

obviously I know this is a symbolic move, but I suspect Mr Murdoch won’t be losing too much sleep over it.

Murdoch recently consolidated his domination of Christian publishing, carving out for himself a sweet 50% of the global market.

As HarperCollins (a division of NewsCorp) already owns Zondervan, the largest publisher of Bibles in the world, should Anglican Churches – and Christians in general – steer clear of purchasing Zondervan Bibles.

This might sound easy in practice, but as Zondervan publish the New International Version (NIV), which is better known in Low-Anglican circles as the Nearly Infallible Version, this would be a terrible wrench, especially given the NIV is CofE approved.

Jokes aside, given the control over Christian literature publishing Rupert Murdock enjoys, it would be nearly impossible for any Church to prohibit the gold in their coffers lining Murdoch’s pocket.

  1. Peter Kirk Says:

Please get your facts right! In the UK the NIV is sold by Hodders, who are nothing to do with Murdoch. So long live the NIV in the Church of England!

  2. webmaster Says:

OK peter we’ll split the difference.

Zondervan in the US + Hodder in the UK.

And for the record, I heartily support your call for ‘long live the NIV in the Church of England’ ;-)
