Quote of the Day

And we need to be smart in our approach. How do you do that? I have always believed that, as a general principle. You don’t win the fight by leaving the ring. You don’t walk away from the battlefield and let bigots spread hate unchallenged. You engage – confident in the power of argument.

Yes! So agree with that sentiment!
And also with the line that follows:
…Confident in the power of liberal values to defeat prejudice.

The context of the quote is important, as is the person (who I do not have a lot of regard for) saying it. I would change the quote from:

“You don’t win the fight by leaving the ring”
    to:
“You win the fight by knocking your opponent out and making sure he cannot get up again”

Some people do not want to engage in the power of argument, they only want to win and they don’t care how they do it, so long as their aim is accomplished. I learned from experience that you put such an opponent down and make sure he stays down, otherwise he will come back and do even worse than he did before. None of this namby-pamby liberal nonsense for me I’m afraid (I’m not really afraid, it’s just an expression).
