Perhaps I’m a pedant, but it always frustrates me when people muddle the words ‘uninterested’ and ‘disinterested’, which, although they look similar, mean very different things.

I feel the same way about the term ‘secularism’. Does the BRIN survey mean that people are against the separation of Church and State? Or does it mean that they are against people turning to acceptance of a material world rather than a belief in God?

I wonder if the people who BRIN asked consciously differentiated between the two? I doubt they did. Incidentally I also think that the NSS gets very muddled about this. Even as an Atheist I share your views webmaster about the often unecessarily nasty tone of some of the articles in their newsletters.

The Chief Rabbi was on TV last night, (can’t recall which channel but worth downloading to watch) arguing for the relevance and need for religion, regardless of belief; and he made some very good points – although I would disagree with his implied premise that as a society we are worse off than we were in the past.

The use of secularism as an equivalent does not make any sense in this question, looks like it was thrown into the mix to avoid and skew the base question – Is islam the greatest threat to Christianity?

    You spelt ‘details’ wrong, lol.

  4. webmaster Says:

@Tim, thanks bro, always pick me up on these things as I’d rather correct. Can you believe I trained to teach English to non-native speakers and yet I’m so crap at it :)

I have found that where typing and spelling mistakes are concerned the hand can be quicker than the eye, lol.

Absolutely right Tim. And you’ve probably noticed that I’m a quick fire blogger, I don’t tend to runimate and craft a piece of excellence, I just kinda pound out my thoughts at the time.

Rightly or wrongly I suppose, we’re all different, and that’s what makes it interesting….I hope….

This was the subject of a Spectator Debate earlier this year – Barnabas Fund’s Patrick Sookhdeo did rather win the argument by pointing out that secularism had never destroyed Christianity but Islamisation had.

As this guy knows his stuff, (but this gal doesn’t :) ) I thought you might be interested to read what he said:
