The favourite religion of hackers – Christianity!

I was busy reading an interesting piece over at the BBC on the inner life of hackers.

According to Noa Bar Yosef, who works for a security firm and hangs around hacker forums, a favourite subject is religion.

I was very intrigued to read of a poll conducted on such a forum, to find out the faith of its hacking members.

Surprisingly – well I thought so – Christianity topped the poll at 29% of forum members. Second was no religion at 28%, 24% followed Islam, 4% were Hindus and 1.8% professed to be Buddhists.

So there you go, according to this poll the favoured religion of hackers is Christianity.

Anyone else a little surprised by this…..

And would it be correct to assume that most Christian bloggers are Catholics I wonder? There seem to be a lot of us out there.

Hi Richard great to see you over here.

Yes, it would interesting to know. We’d of course have to include all non-English blogs, which would be revealing.

I think Fr Z is probably the biggest of all the blogs.

A group of banknotes demonised by shopkeepers as “forged” revealed that 99% of the banknotes considered themselves as genuine. Over 60% claimed to be churchgoers. One note failed a drug test, unfortunately.

A lobby group has been formed to lobby for anti-hate laws to protect this victimised section of society. They hope the ban the word “forgery” in favour of “differently printed”, and ensure that these notes are accepted everywhere.

The society has faced rumours that its secretary has refused to accept any cash payments for subscriptions, but has said that for technical reasons it prefers electronic payments anyway.

    Hey, Stuart!

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I am a little disappointed. Frankly, holding the religious lead among practicioners of unethical IT practices isn’t exactly the kind of kudos I like to see. Not really a bragging point, is it?

Hopefully, you’ll see me around a little more; and thanks to Stacy for bringing us together!

I don’t know much about hacking, but does the statistic not reflect more the nations and cultures in which the poll was carried out, rather than providing a truly global snapshot into the issue?

    There’s a PhD in there for someone….
