Coathanger crucifix now scaring me in the real world as well as the virtual

You’re not going to believe this one.

I walked into my cathedral this morn to be confronted by this terrifying sculpture, which I found so scary and disturbing when I first saw it online that I blogged about it here.

Now I really will have nightmares….

    You poor thing!

    I couldn’t believe it, it is literally right at the inside entrance and is on a MASSIVE cross which is different to the images. My face was level with its toes!

    So many folks taking piccies of it, goodness knows why…

    It’s dreadful! I suppose it’s art but is it really appropriate in a Cathedral? Perhaps the idea is to really bring home graphically Christ’s suffering, but to me it just seems to be the work of an artist seeking to shock and therefore gain notoriety and higher prices for his/her work. Maybe I’m getting too cynical! I think I would find it very off-putting in Church…

    That is surreal! It really makes me feel uncomfortable, which I suppose is the purpose of it.

    In order to comment on this I would have to see a picture

    @Dennis,
    If you click through the highlighted link in the opening blogpost ‘terrifying sculpture’ you will see it.

    The one that makes me most uncomfortable, is Damien Hirst’s – St Bartholomew; exquisite pain. An 8ft bronze, which depicts St Bartholomew flayed alive, and holding his own skin.

    Is both repelling and compelling.

    We have gotten way too comfortable with the real idea, or reality really, of Christ’s crucifixion!
