Reverend Michael Land, Vicar of St Mary the Virgin in Herefordshire: Christians need to start swearing

What a load of old bullshit:

Telegraph:

The Norman church, has stood for hundreds of years in the tranquil village of Burghill, in countryside surrounded by apple and pear orchards.

However, its vicar, who used to work in the East End of London, is urging parishoners to move aggresively into the modern age – by swearing more.

Reverend Michael Land, 67, said Christians needed to adopt swearing in their everyday language because it is how Jesus would have spoken.

He said too many people put Jesus “on a pedestal” and failed to realise that he was poor, relatively uneducated and preferred not to mix with the elite of his day.

He added that the Church risked becoming out of touch with ordinary people if its clergy did not become “streetwise” and failed to use earthy language.

Where ignorance predominates, vulgarity invariably asserts itself.

And as if to prove this adage, please note that the words parishioners and aggressively are spelt incorrectly in this crappy article.

abomination to god you should be made to leave and get a job on a building site if you want to swear all day

In the sermon on the mount (Matt.5:34), Jesus said: “Do not swear at all; either by heaven for it is God’s throne, or by the earth because it is God’s footstool….” I hardly think that Jesus would be so hypocritical as to condemn swearing, and then use foul or obscene language himself, would he ?

In Response to Rev land’s article in the mail Sat 31st July,

The only way to respond to Rev land’s claims about Jesus using bad language as his comments suggest and I quote” “People today would be shocked at the language he used”! And his claim that “Jesus regularly liked to swear” is Fantasy!

The Bible has the opposite to say about the use of bad language

Col 3:8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.
    NKJV

Eph 4:29 29 Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it.

As for Jesus being, and I quote the Rev, poor and lacked any real education, the Bible says about him–

    Luke 2:40
40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God
    NKJV

    Luke 2:46-48
46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.
NKJV Jesus was 12 at the time!

In closing, I’m saddened that someone who has served as a minister for many years would encourage his flock to use bad language, as the article suggests. I’m all for being relevant in today’s society but let’s promote the “Love of God” and not the bad language he’s suggesting!
