  10. John Richardson (the Ugley Vicar) Says:

Apparently I write like David Foster Wallace, which is both worrying and, in this context, ironic.

It is worrying because he suffered from deep depression and committed suicide in 2008 at the age of 46.

It is ironic because, according to his Wikipedia entry, when he was young his mother “used to fake coughing fits if her children uttered a solecism at dinner, stopping only when they figured out the error and corrected it.”

I am coughing furiously. Can anyone figure why? (The answer is at the top of the page.)

    Blast John, is it whom?

  12. John Richardson (the Ugley Vicar) Says:

    Think: “WHO wrote like that?”

    Answer, “HE did!”

The question, “WHO do you write like?”, therefore invites the answer, “I write like HE.”

The question, “WHOM do you write like?” (or better, “Like whom do you write?”) invites the answer, “I write like HIM.” That’s better!

  13. John Richardson (the Ugley Vicar) Says:

    The coughing has stopped, btw!
