Election 2010: Volcano ‘shows leaders must repent’

What do you reckon on this one from the BBC:

The UK’s political leaders need to “do some repenting” and give greater recognition to religion, a Christian Peoples Alliance candidate has said.

“Our whole political system has hardened itself against God in rampant secularism,” said John Manwell.

“This has to change,” he said, calling for a fresh approach to politics.

Ash “is a clear Biblical sign of repentance” and the Iceland volcano was a reminder that “the human race is powerless compared to God”, he added.

“As a sign from God, it was gracious; no-one was killed.”

Mr Manwell called for “a fresh approach to politics” in the UK, urging people to their faith in God, rather than political parties.

“Surely it is time to call on God and seek His help in healing the brokenness of Britain.”

The Christian Peoples Alliance is fielding 17 parliamentary candidates in the general election, and has 130 candidates standing for council seats across England.

It also has three councillors in the east London borough of Newham, including its leader, Alan Craig.

Was the Icelandic volcanic eruption a clear sign from God on the spiritual condition of our nation as John Hagee also suggested? Or was it simply a random geological event?

Neither of the above of course. Volcano eruptions are one of the few natural phenomena that we are still unable to predict – Although it is quite possible that one day we will be able to do so. There is nothing random about volcanoes. It’s just not possible to track and interpret the extremely complex processes leading to them with current technology and understanding.

I’m puzzled how John Hagee can think with such certainty that he can ascribe physical phenomena to God’s reaction to specific human actions. I’m even more puzzled why people believe him. Why are some humans so gullible?

  2. webmaster Says:

@Jim yes of course in the strictest sense these events are not random.

It makes me wonder if a political candidate should say such things, even if they do believe it themselves. These sort of faith statements certainly don’t connect very well with the general populace.

The Scotsman picked up on this one this morning:

Add to this the fact that the ash problem was a political spoof. The ash spread over the UK was predicted by computer modeling and didn’t necessarily exist. It represented scaremongering by those on high rather than any real danger.

Therefore the thought of God saving us from catastrophe- from a none existent danger is a bit odd.

The UK government has been training the people to jump through hoops one after the other for a rather long time now. Witness the BSE crisis, foot and mouth disease, bird flu, swine flu, global warming etc. In all these cases the government over reaction was deliberately monstrous and perverse. These are all training scenarios for creating an unquestioning subservient population which is used to Government commands to do stupid things.

Yes there was an actual volcano at work, but the alarmism attached to it by authorities is a matter of choice.

Check out a number of web sites and you will find that it was never a real problem which airlines have not been dealing with safely worldwide for decades.

Before we respond with the incident about the Jumbojet which lost all four engines in 1982 over indonesia, that aircraft actually flew through the volcanic plume so dense they couldn’t see. They even found rocks inside the engine housings when they examined the damage!

I don’t think the Icelandic eruption was showering rocks over the UK airspace this last week!

I know that this nation is far from God, and under His cloud of judgment, and deservedly so.

  4. Webmaster Says:

    @Bob. Personally I think you’re spot on.

There was something rather odd about the whole episode which as you rightly point out had similar overtones to other recent “alarmist” episodes.

I’m glad you mentioned the 1982 Indonesia Jumbo Jet incident. The documentary about this was pumped out several times during the last week or so (no coincidence of course) and was frightening indeed, but hardly comparable to our clear blue skies!

What is more interesting is that in a secular society a lot of people are open to the idea that this was an act of the almighty or at least a sign and recognition that the UK has lost its way.

  6. Susan Says:

That is an interesting point Goy.

I saw this one in the Liverpool Echo
