One of my sons is disabled. He has brittle Type 1 diabetes. Going though puberty, GCSEs etc. is tough for everyone, but teenage diabetics get a particularly bad deal. The insulin on which he relies is very much affected by other hormones. Growth hormone and insulin clash particularly badly, and my son’s growing like a weed.

Tom’s been in hospital 4 times already this year, with blood sugars yo-yoing dramatically and dangerously. His school attendance last term was only 40%.

My good news is that since Easter his sugars have suddenly settled. Totally transformed. He was given antibiotics for an ear infection and these made an amazing difference. The GP suspects he may have had a low grade infection rumbling away for months which the antibiotics cleared up.

Whatever the reason, Tom is well. He is a conscientious boy and has kept his grades up despite his many absences, but the gaps were beginning to show. No one can do well if they’re missing more than half the course.

I’ve been so worried about him: both his long term health and his academic future. Luckily I have my own small business but even with the flexibility this allows me, my own life has been impossible to plan.

So, after months of anxiety, Tom has been stable for a fortnight. I am so grateful yet almost nervous to hope that this will continue.

It may not sound very cheerful news, but in our family life it’s a huge relief, even if it’s only temporary.
