BBC HARDtalk – Stephen Sackur talks with Michael Nazir-Ali, Former Bishop of Rochester

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I’m no fan of the trend of “interviewers” to be disrespectful, arrogant, aggressive, insulting, deaf, and ill-informed in the nuances of the topic at hand, and for me Stephen Sackur fulfills all of the above, in his interview with Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali.

BBC iplayer – HARDtalk – Michael Nazir-Ali, Former Bishop of Rochester

Michael Nazir-Ali is such a mellow, spiritually minded, highly intellectual individual, it’s shameful to see him interviewed in this manner for me personally.

Granted this is the style of “HARDtalk” and I think it was considerably brave of Nazir-Ali to agree to be interviewed on this particular program.

Family see Jesus image in Marmite

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Can you believe this is the second most shared “news” item on the BBC website currently, and the fourth most popular read:-

It may not be immediately obvious to everyone, but one family are convinced they can see the face of Jesus on the lid of a jar of Marmite. Claire Allen, 36, said she was the first to notice the image on the underside of the lid as she was putting the yeast spread on her son’s toast.

I liked this comment  from Clair Allen:-

“People might think I’m nuts, but I like to think it’s Jesus looking out for us.

Indeed.

No wonder the general populace in general view us as “eccentric”, or as “oddities“.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday addressed a Christians United for Israel (CUFI) summit in Jerusalem and encouraged Christian Zionists around the world to stay the course in their defense of the Jewish state.

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

A little encouragement for Christian Zionists from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and let’s face it, we are in need of some positive gestures from Israel at times, it really does help.

Israel National News

Netanyahu reiterated the amazing turn of events that the presence of Israel-loving Christians in the Jewish state represents after centuries of Christian persecution of Jewish minorities.

“Your presence here today represents a profound transformation in the relationship between Christians and Jews,” said the prime minister. “This transformation has its roots in the 19th century when the early Christian Zionists came to the Land Israel and when they began exploring the land of the Bible, when they began to yearn for the Jewish restoration in this land, the restoration of our numbers, the restoration of our sovereignty.”

Netanyahu noted the Christian Zionism actually preceded modern Jewish Zionism, and acted as a stepping stone for the reestablishment of Israeli sovereignty. In the same spirit as those 19th century Christian Zionists, Netanyahu said leaders like CUFI Director John Hagee are continuing to hold Israel aloft in both prayer and advocacy.

“Time after time, through thick and thin, you have stood shoulder to shoulder with our state, and I have come here tonight to thank you for your unwavering friendship,” said Netanyahu. “I salute you, the people of Israel salute you, the Jewish people salute you.”

The summit was attended by 1,000 Christian delegates and led by Hagee, who took the opportunity to reaffirm his support and the support of tens of millions of American Christians for Israel.

Here are some of Hagee’s comments from the summit:-

Priest Reverend Frank Wainwright, a Catholic Deacon at St Gregory’s Church in Cheltenham apologises for joking that marriage is not for ‘Adam and Steve’

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Should the Reverend Frank Wainwright have apologised, and was this a “controversial comment” as highlighted in this Telegraph report.

Is it no longer prudent for Ministers to publicly declare that they believe Holy Matrimony is designed for a man and a woman, for fear of offence?

Finally, is it not striking that a short sermon from the “Shires” can become national news, especially if the talk dares drift into the issue of gay marriage?

Telegraph:-

A Catholic priest has apologised for joking during a sermon that true marriage can only be between Adam and Eve – not ”Adam and Steve”

Reverend Frank Wainwright, 48, a Deacon at St Gregory’s Church in Cheltenham, Glos., made the controversial comment during a Sunday service.

He was preaching on the theme of marriage when he claimed that same-sex civil partnerships are not considered as marriage by the Catholic church.

But his ”flippant joke” sparked five complaints from his congregation and has been branded as homophobic by gay and lesbian rights groups.

Rev Frank Wainwright, who lives in Cheltenham, Glos., apologised for causing any offence and claimed he is not ”homophobic”.

He said: ”The sermon was about marriage and I have no idea why all this has come up but someone has obviously complained.

”The comment is obviously not homophobic and it was just intended as a joke. My duty is to preach what the church preaches that marriage is between a man and a woman.

”I have plenty of gay friends and I have no problem at all with them but as a Catholic minister I must preach that marriage is between a man and woman and nothing else.

”I’m sure there are gay members of my congregation and I imagine it’s one of them who complained but it certainly wasn’t the thrust of my sermon.

”I can see why people are upset by the comment because it was flippant. I totally accept that I have caused offence and I am apologising for that.”

Rev Frank Wainwright delivered the 15-minute sermon on marriage at St Gregory’s Church on January 17 this year.

He told his 200-strong congregation: ”Sometimes in our families we have situations that either surprise us or are not ideal.

”For example if your 15-year-old daughter comes home and says ‘I’m pregnant’ even if it’s a shock and we disagree the first thing we should do to that person is hug them and let them know they are still family.

”Sometimes within the church we have to hold our heads above the parapet and say what we believe as Catholics and sometimes in saying that we will be marginalised and put down.

”For example, in adoption a child has a right to want a mother and father.

”That marriage is between a man and a woman and it’s a life-long commitment and usually only ended by death, as it was in the beginning and ever shall be.

”Marriage is between Adam and Eve – not Adam and Steve.”

A Messianic Jewish Levite on the New Priesthood According to Melchizedek

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

A very lucid guest post by Levitt over at the Rosh Pina Project. Levitt is a Messianic Levite and shares his thoughts on the priesthood, which I think is rather cool.

Guest post by Levitt

In the context of Galatians, Paul makes the point that the Torah given by Moses was an addition to the Abrahamic Covenant. It was added in order to make sin very clear so that we will all know, and be without excuse that we have fallen short of the righteous standard set before us by God. So it was a temporary addition until the Messiah came, the Seed, and now that He has come, the Torah has done its job.

We read in Hebrews 7:

Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness.

Now with Messiah there is a New Priesthood according to the Order of Melchizedek. Now this system is different from my ancestors, the Levitical Priesthood. You recall this was provided for under the Torah given by Moses, which describes it’s operation. Now it is interesting to note that if you have a New Priesthood you surely need a new Torah under which it can operate. Equally if you have a new Torah, then surely the Old Priesthood has no structure under which to operate.

Previously only one type of priesthood was permitted, the Levitical Priesthood. Now this Hebrews text clearly tells us that the Levitical Priesthood could not bring perfection. Blood sacrifices only temporarily covered sin, Messiah blood brings complete removal of sins.

The writer of Hebrews says that the Levitical priesthood has been done away with and replaced with the Priesthood of Melchizedek. This would require a change in the Torah. As long as the Torah of Moses was in effect, no other priesthood was valid except the Aaronic or Levitical Priesthood.

Hebrews 7:18 states that the Mosaic Law was set aside because it was weak and useless!

Because it is no longer in effect, we now have a New Priesthood after the Order of Melchizedek. If the Mosaic law were still in effect, then how could Yeshua function as a priest?

Yeshua is a priest after the Order of Melchizedek.

We read in 2 Corinthians 3:

You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Messiah, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart. And we have such trust through Messiah toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

  • v7 Paul refers to the Law as the ministration of death
  • v9 he calls it the ministration of condemnation
  • v3 and v7 highlight the Ten Commandments as these are the tablets or engraved stones

The point Paul is making, the Ten Commandments were leading to death and condemnation. If they were in force today, this would still be true. Good then that they are no longer in force. v7 and v11 says they are passing away. From this passage it is clear, that the Ten Commandments are no longer legally in effect.

The Torah still stands to reveal the holiness of God, provide a rule/guide for conduct, and to define sin, and ultimately it is a tutor to lead us to utter faith in Moshiach. However it is clear that no righteousness, justification, sanctification or perfection is through the Torah. This comes through Yeshua the Messiah’s work. This is the fulfilment of Torah, and brings the Torah to its intended completion.

Indeed, the superiority of the Torah of Moshiach is seen by the fact that it will be never be rendered inoperative.

WORLDWIDE PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS BY MUSLIMS AND HINDUS INTENSIFIES

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Cross-post by David at Virtue Online:-

There is a growing and intensifying attack on Christians around the world.

It is not just confined to the Middle East and Islamic countries.

Christians from Egypt to Iraq, from Pakistan to Nigeria are being attacked and killed by Muslims and Hindus.

For all its vaunted advances in technology, there is a growing hatred and intolerance of Christians by Hindus in India, a country whose laws, civil service, roads and military were established by Christians over a century ago.

Hindu hatred of Christians is growing around the country and you can witness this in the state of Orissa.

In India, where these videos were shot, you can see Hindus attacking and killing Christians with clubs while the Police look on and do nothing.

Please note these tapes are gruesome and should not be watched by children or young adults.

These are not tapes you will see at so-called interfaith gatherings or groups of high level clergy gabfests meeting in Washington DC where everybody talks pleasantries about “niceness” and “friendship”.

These are brutal attacks of Christians that occur on streets far from the halls of power.

Lilian Ladele a Christian registrar who lost her job after she refused to carry out civil partnership ceremonies has been refused permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Previous posts here, here, here and here.

Telegraph:-

Lilian Ladele’s situation does not raise legal points of “general public importance”, according to the highest court in the land.

She is now considering whether to try to take her case to the European Court of Human Rights, as she believes it shows that the right to religious conscience has been “trampled” by the rights of homosexuals.

It comes just days after senior bishops and peers warned that clergy could be sued if they refuse to perform civil partnership ceremonies for same-sex couples in church, as an amendment approved by the House of Lords now permits.

There were already fears that Christians enjoy less legal protection than minority groups after the Appeal Court ruled last month that British Airways had not discriminated against an employee by banning her from wearing a cross.

Miss Ladele, speaking via her lawyer, said: “I am naturally disappointed by the Supreme Court’s rejection of my application for appeal. I am actively discussing with my lawyers the possibility of an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

“When the rights of different groups clash, as they have in my case, surely there must be a proportionate attempt to balance those competing rights. In my case, one set of rights was trampled by another set of rights. That cannot be right in a free and democratic society. I believe my case raises important issues of liberty that deserve further consideration by the courts.”

I’m sure there will be a fair amount of activity online as a result of this decision, and if there’s anything interesting I’ll post the link here.

Update: First out of the blocks is the Christian Institute, which is unsurprising as they are backing Ladele.

Next out of the blocks is PinkNews.

And now the British Humanist Association, who are rather pleased with the result as you can imagine.

Rifleman James McKie: Don’t throw your grenade at me, have it back!

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I enjoyed reading this one:-

BBC

A British soldier has described how he picked up a Taliban hand grenade which landed at his feet and threw it back towards the enemy.

Rifleman James McKie was on a tiny rooftop in Sangin. He and two of his platoon could hear the bullets fired by the Taliban below bouncing off the roof.

The 29-year-old soldier had just finished firing back when the grenade thrown by the insurgents bounced off his platoon commander and landed just a foot away from him.

He heard a small pop, “like a fire-cracker,” before he saw the grenade land.

The young soldier, originally from New Zealand, made a split-second decision that was to save his life and those of his two comrades on that roof. He picked up the grenade, and threw it back.

“I saw the grenade, and my first thought was that I knew I had to get it away from us. And my second was ‘I hope this doesn’t hurt too much’,” he says, with a wry smile.

“As I picked it up, my thoughts were for the other guys with me – Capt Graeme Kerr and Rifleman Holtman. We had lost Cpl Green the day before.

“I didn’t want to go through that again, and I wasn’t prepared to see another guy from our platoon get hurt. I’d rather that it was myself than someone else. So I got my body behind the grenade and managed to throw it off.”

US: Refusal of lesbian couple’s child at Catholic elementary school in Boulder brings out dissenters

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

This one’s causing a stir in the US:-

CNA

After local media reported that the child of a lesbian couple was refused enrollment at an elementary school in Boulder, the Archdiocese of Denver told CNA that opposition to its decision comes from those “who disagree with the Church’s position on homosexuality in general” and want an “excuse” to voice their opinion.

Local channel 9NEWS reported on Friday that the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Boulder, Colorado recently held a meeting to discuss the situation of a pre-school student whose parents are lesbians. School staff members were told early last week that the child would not be allowed to re-enroll. According to the station, certain anonymous staff members reacted negatively and were “disgusted” by the archdiocese’s decision.

In response to this claim, Jeanette DeMelo, spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Denver, told CNA that “So far any school staff feedback hasn’t been expressed to the Catholic schools office. We have heard from some Catholic school parents from SHJ but the number is not high.”

“We are hearing mostly from people who disagree with the Church’s position on homosexuality in general and this decision is an excuse to voice that opposition to Church teaching,” she added.

In a statement on Friday, the archdiocese explained its decision by saying that the “principal reason parents place their children in Archdiocese of Denver Schools is to reinforce the Catholic beliefs and values that the family seeks to live at home.”

“Parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose by their actions to disqualify their children from enrollment,” the Friday statement said.

Interesting Facts the American Humanist Association (AHA) Might Not Know, part 1 of 4

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Cross-post by Mariano – Atheism is Dead

Edd Doerr, “former elected head of the American Humanist Association for 14 years” dissents from the current AHA campaigns.

This seemed like a good occasion to consider just how the AHA purposes that we be without God.

As for the AHA ads which read “No God?…No Problem! Be Good for goodness’ sake,” Edd Doerr wrote, “I am embarrassed by the A.H.A.’s “good without God” campaign.”[1]

This is because, as he explains:

Humanists are philosophical naturalists…one item of the humanist worldview is emphasizing the many positive positions we hold in common with a wide range of religious believers.

I refer to such matters as peace, civil liberties, religious freedom, the environment, social justice, democracy, women’s rights and so on.

He feels that there are more pressing matters upon which to focus and thus, is embarrassed by “angry debates about philosophy.” He states that “Our planetary society does not have the luxury of engaging in” such things and states:

Progressive and mainstream humanists, Catholics, Protestants, Jews and others of good will need to concentrate on what unites us, not on what divides us. Divisive ad campaigns invite blowback and stimulate both ends of the religious spectrum to engage in fruitless bouts of name-calling and invective.

Indeed, atheist complain of being viewed with suspicion, at best, and yet as long as they insist on defining atheism as anti-theism, anti-religion, anti-religious people, anti-God, anti-anything/everything and pro-nothing but a negative position and belligerence they cannot expect much more.

The very reason for inventing terms such as Humanists, Brights, etc. was to attempt to get away from the negative connotations of the term “atheism.”

For example, “New Atheist” movement poster boy Sam Harris warned that:

…our use of this label is a mistake—and a mistake of some consequence. My concern with the use of the term “atheism” is both philosophical and strategic. I’m speaking from a somewhat unusual and perhaps paradoxical position because, while I am now one of the public voices of atheism, I never thought of myself as an atheist before being inducted to speak as one…I think that “atheist” is a term that we do not need, in the same way that we don’t need a word for someone who rejects astrology. We simply do not call people “non-astrologers.” All we need are words like “reason” and “evidence” and “common sense.”

Moreover, while Sam Harris argues that there should be no such word as “atheism” American Atheists counter-argue that they have fought long and hard for the acceptance of atheism and thus, the term should not be gotten rid of. Keep in mind that Sam Harris is the atheist Buddhist mystic who does not like the labels “atheist,” “Buddhist” or “mystic.”

“Humanism” has always been premised upon the concept of atheism is disguise. Note the words of the late Corliss Lamont who taught a course in Humanism at Columbia University; from “The Independent Mind Essays Of A Humanist Philosopher,” pp. 63-64:

I suppose that the first and fairest question to ask our redefiners is, What is the purpose and value of this complex and bewildering game? I imagine that their chief answer is that they do not wish to cut themselves off…

They wish to work within the tradition or within the church and win people over gradually to a new and more acceptable idea of God; to evolve a religion relevant to modem conditions while retaining the hallowed and well-loved words of old. All this would become impossible if they acknowledged themselves as atheists…

There is the additional consideration that the term atheist has certain undesirable connotations apart from its primary meaning as simply a denial of theism, It has frequently been associated with enemies of society and narrow-minded dogmatists…

The attitude of the redefinitionists perhaps comes most appropriately under the heading of what is sometimes called “strategy.” Direct, frontal attacks on the old ideas do not, we are told, result in progress. They stiffen the defense mechanisms of the faithful and handicap the critic by making him appear a crank and a radical…

Some of them, akin to those who aim to reform the church from within, plan to win subtly…though always being careful to call it something else.

With this in mind we will consider the reasoning behind the ads as we progress.
