Serbia’s newly installed Orthodox Patriarch Irinej has suggested a worldwide ecumenical encounter in 2013, to mark the 1700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan. He suggested that the event could take place in Nis, the Serbian birthplace of the Emperor Constantine, and expressed the hope that Pope Benedict XVI would attend—in what would be the first visit ever by a Roman Pontiff to Serbia.
Patriarch Irinej did not explicitly suggest that the meeting in Nis could provide the opportunity for a “summit meeting” between the Pope and the Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill. But in light of the close ties between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Moscow patriarchate, the Russian prelate would surely be expected to attend.

Bad, bad, bad news.
A return to the past–a return to Empire.

It is bad news, but not because it is a return to empire – those days are long gone. (Rather we are approaching the catcombs again.)
It is bad news because it likely means that this new Patriarch of Serbia is not going to express in all its forms the ecclesiology of the Orthodox Church and with it the truth of the Gospel with all of its implication. For, elsewhere he has indicated that he rejects the “ecumenism of return” and embraces the idea that “all together we will approach the altar”. But, this is not Orthodox for what separates the Orthodox from the Western confessions (and what attracts them to Orthodoxy) is the Church’s dedication to following the Holy Fathers, to remaining in the Tradition – and such an approach/rapprochement to the heterodox is not found among the Holy Fathers.

I am so dissapointed!!! I truly believe that the orthodoxy is going to be sold by its hierarchy.I am a Romanian one and we have now an “ecumenist” patriarch…ellected against the previous patriarch Teoctist’s will. We were hoping at least a single orthodox country to have a real orthodox partiarch at least. That’s why we admired so much the patriarch Pavle. And now, with the new one in your country I am so sad to hear the same words”ecumenism ecumenism, ecumenism”.I feel like vomiting! Moreover,he suspended the metropolitan of Kosovo,I forgot his name, but the one that defended orthodoxy against americans. The Metropolitan was fahter Justin Popovici spiritual son. In Rousia things are even worst: new patriarch Kiril,is exactely their man!But seems we live the Apocaliptic words.Seems that orthodoxy must be confessed and defended by humble orthodox people, because its leaders are selling Christ to UE.”It’s time for marthirdom!”as our beloved father Justin from Moldavia said.
