Cadbury takeover by US rival Kraft
I’m sure that others feel a sense of sadness as another of our giant companies is taken over by ‘foreign’ rivals.
Having had the pleasure of taking my son on the Bourneville Cadbury factory tour a couple of years ago, I was warmed to learn of the founders Quaker beliefs and how this drove their ethical and social work.
Did you know that to this day you cannot buy alcohol within the Bournville village boundaries. The Cadbury founders invested heavily in social projects, housing, education and so on and as recent as 2003 the BBC featured an article entitled:-
I know that Gordon Brown has put Kraft in their place and has warned them over job cuts and presumably they are quaking (forgive the pun) in their boots. In spite of this masterful warning, I think Gordon misses the point somewhat, as we have just lost another part of our heritage and Cadbury will never be the same again.
The BBC have an article entitled:-
The Jewish world is proud of the achievements of Irene Rosenfeld, the chief executive of Kraft, but I hope that you will join me in lamenting this great loss of a once wonderful British Quaker company.
